Practice Overview

Dr. Vince Berquist Vincent F. Bergquist, M.D. Orthopedic Surgeon
Dr. Bergquist was born in Columbus, Georgia. He received a B.S. degree from Emory University and an M.D. degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He studied general surgery under Dr. James Hardy, a pioneering surgeon and textbook author, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center before returning to the Medical College of Georgia to complete specialized training in orthopedic surgery. He served as chief orthopedic resident during his final year of residency. Impressed by his work, the Medical College of Georgia asked him to stay as an orthopedic attending, but Dr. Bergquist chose to pursue private practice.

Dr. Bergquist obtained board certification from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and was invited to become a Fellow of the Academy. Currently, he practices general orthopedics in Cullman, Alabama with special interests in total joint (hip, knee, and shoulder) replacement, sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery, and endoscopic carpel tunnel surgery. His concern for patients continually drives him to improve his skills. Recently, he completed advanced training in the reconstruction of failed total joints, in mini-incision total joints, and in computer-assisted total joint surgery. In the past, Dr. Bergquist introduced a number of new procedures to Cullman, including space suit technology, computer assisted total joint surgery, and autologous blood transfusion. His concern for patient care has also led him to serve on several Cullman Regional Medical Center (CRMC) committees, and he currently serves as an officer of the CRMC medical staff.

Dr. Bergquist is an active member and deacon at East Side Baptist Church. He leads a men's Precept Upon Precept Bible study at his home each week. With his wife Dixie, he has three adult children - a daughter who is a PhD statistician in Raleigh, NC; a second daughter who is an M.D. radiologist in Birmingham, AL; and a son who is working on a master's degree in electrical engineering. In his spare time, Dr. Bergquist enjoys reading, water skiing, and working outdoors at his home in rural Cullman County amidst ponies, geese, stray dogs and cats, and a rescued chipmunk.

Most of his efforts at this time involve arthroscopy whereby problems caused by "wear and tear," accidents (automobile, sports, etc.) and developmental abnormalities are treated. He also has a significant interest in adult reconstructive surgery, especially joint replacement. In addition, he has been successful in returning persons with intervertebral disc abnormalities back to normal activity. As is the case with all practitioners, he makes every effort to stay abreast of developments in these areas of medicine by attending educational meetings, reviewing journals, etc.
